On Feb 23, 1999, Eminem crash landed onto the rap scene with the release of his major label album debut, The Slim Shady LP.
The album which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 was certified platinum within two months and created a superstar who would become rap’s most infamous bogeyman.
The Detroit Free Press calls The Slim Shady LP, a raw, colorful, parental-advisory-plastered shock wave of a major-label debut.
With lyrics like “I’ll strangle you to death, then I’ll choke you again/And break your fucking legs ’til your bones poke through your skin” NME says the album hit you in the face like a sledgehammer.
Eminem was still living part-time in a trailer when the album was released. He was discovered by Dr. Dre who executive produced the album which was released on Interscope Records.
The album was buoyed by the MTV-born smash single “My Name Is.” which introduced the world to the rappers alter ego Slim Shady.
